Canada Discusses Response to a Potential Impact of Proposed 50% U.S. Tariffs

Members of the Advisory Committee on Canada–U.S. Economic Relations met to discuss the U.S. administration’s intention to impose a new 50% tariff on a range of Canadian goods.

During the meeting, Minister LeBlanc reiterated that Canada has presented detailed and comprehensive proposals aimed at resolving trade disputes and modernizing the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). He noted that discussions between Canada and the United States are expected to continue and intensify in the coming weeks. The Minister also emphasized that Canada remains committed to working closely with the United States to find solutions that support workers, farmers, businesses, and families in both countries.

Committee members discussed the potential impacts of the proposed tariffs on key sectors of the Canadian economy and examined possible responses to help protect and advance Canada’s interests.
